Ecological Sustainable Design (ESD) options should be considered during the earliest stages of the design process. We are happy to work closely with the design team, client, architects and consulting engineers to ensure sustainable practices are considered and designed from the outset. Through intelligent design, sustainability can be embedded into a project rather than tacked on the end. This avoids excessive cost uplift for sustainability features. We consider both active and passive approaches have their place in specific circumstances.

When considering operational energy, we follow the hierarchy of:

  1. Good passive design through form and fabric, as it will remain for the life of the development.
  2. Installation of energy effective building services.
  3. Followed by renewable energy.

Embodied energy, sustainable material selection, pollution, water, waste, site ecology, and the health and well being of occupants, are all important considerations when undertaking any ESD.
